Summary

Sort-of slow and stilted, there’s not a lot of momentum with the story。 Parts were good but essentially it’s just rich people fucking around in Europe, not super compelling or interesting。

While nothing particularly “sad” happens, there is a melancholic mood in the entire book。 Entirely unexpected。

Not a bad book, but also not nearly as good as The Great Gatsby。Dick was a terrible character though, I really disliked him。

This is a classic novel that I never read。 There are some exceptionally written, well described parts。 However, the overriding feeling of this book is that it is a study in dissipation。

Parts 1 & 3 were fantastic。。。 found part 2 a little slow going but overall a great read。

Took me some time to review this as I went to Miami immediately after finishing。This is perhaps F。 Scott's best。 I will have to read Gatsby again to totally stand behind that opinion, but this is genius writing。 Like most/all F。 Scott novels, this is based closely on his life, with Dick and Nicole representing F。 Scott and Zelda。 In the novel, Dick succumbs to Florence Nightingale syndrome, falling in love with Nicole as he treats her。 He later said he just wanted to be loved, which Nicole provi Took me some time to review this as I went to Miami immediately after finishing。This is perhaps F。 Scott's best。 I will have to read Gatsby again to totally stand behind that opinion, but this is genius writing。 Like most/all F。 Scott novels, this is based closely on his life, with Dick and Nicole representing F。 Scott and Zelda。 In the novel, Dick succumbs to Florence Nightingale syndrome, falling in love with Nicole as he treats her。 He later said he just wanted to be loved, which Nicole provided for him, even if she may not have been doing it from a healthy mind。 As the story and their relationship progresses, both begin to wonder what really binds them and their love。 Is it just because they have been together for so long, through really difficult times, or is there genuine love? Whatever one's takeaway from their relationship is, it closely mirrors what F。 Scott and Zelda are experiencing in their relationship at the time。 As they got older, Zelda became mentally sicker and F。 Scott turned to drink。 While Nicole may have not gotten sicker, the patient-doctor relationship between she and Dick presented a wedge for the longevity of their love。 This wedge got larger and larger, exacerbated by Nicole and Dick's own personal discoveries, until it drove Nicole elsewhere and Dick to the bottle, eventually dissolving their relationship。 。。。more

dick is a dick tbhhhh, but even with all that, rosemary’s perspective definitely makes me understand/feel why she and nicole fell for him

I really don't get it why this book is so highly appreciated。 The beginning was promising, Nicole's case was going to be interesting, but somehow Fitzgerald managed to f*ck it up so that it ended up being pretty boring "someone's sick - let's get married and have children - cheating - breakup" story, absurd, unimaginable wealth and respective life running on the background。 Really unfortunate。 I really don't get it why this book is so highly appreciated。 The beginning was promising, Nicole's case was going to be interesting, but somehow Fitzgerald managed to f*ck it up so that it ended up being pretty boring "someone's sick - let's get married and have children - cheating - breakup" story, absurd, unimaginable wealth and respective life running on the background。 Really unfortunate。 。。。more

Fitzgerald certainly has a way with words and crafts a lovely sentence so that alone got the stars。 I read this in the 60's when still young, ignorant, and living in a sexist society。 I tried once again last week and didn't even get halfway through。 Sixty years later I'm old and grey and wise; I no longer desperately yearn for the lifestyle of Hollywood starlets and filthy rich trust fund babies tripping around Europe on their parent's money。 Been there。 Done that。 I read a lot of classic litera Fitzgerald certainly has a way with words and crafts a lovely sentence so that alone got the stars。 I read this in the 60's when still young, ignorant, and living in a sexist society。 I tried once again last week and didn't even get halfway through。 Sixty years later I'm old and grey and wise; I no longer desperately yearn for the lifestyle of Hollywood starlets and filthy rich trust fund babies tripping around Europe on their parent's money。 Been there。 Done that。 I read a lot of classic literature。 This isn't old enough to be classic and pretty words and sentences are not enough。 The story reads like a bad MOW。 I'm not even going to try Gatsby。 My memories of it are good and I don't want to spoil them。 。。。more

I had a great time reading this。 The story is simple but feels very layered in Fitzgerald’s hands, and it’s the kind of writing where you read everything twice: once to enjoy the words and then again to actually see what it said。 I think the big win of this book for me is Fitzgerald’s ability to equally master real and surreal, of pulling back the veil he creates— every character is complex and human and interesting but the prose never loses its perfect sun-drenched dreamscapiness。 People much s I had a great time reading this。 The story is simple but feels very layered in Fitzgerald’s hands, and it’s the kind of writing where you read everything twice: once to enjoy the words and then again to actually see what it said。 I think the big win of this book for me is Fitzgerald’s ability to equally master real and surreal, of pulling back the veil he creates— every character is complex and human and interesting but the prose never loses its perfect sun-drenched dreamscapiness。 People much smarter than me can point out faults but for me it’s a great time。 。。。more

A lot of strange things happen in this book。 Pairs well with the movie Pierrot le Fou。

Had this book been written in half as many pages, the ones which actually contain plot, it would have been five stars from me。 Unfortunately, I do not care for endless pages of pointless discussions and rendezvous about characters irrelevant to the story。Saying that, the style of writing is certainly lyrical and beautiful and as mentioned, the storyline is incredibly interesting when it occasionally makes it’s appearance every few pages。

I think maybe I simply do not enjoy the tragic romance genre。 I don’t relate to the appeal of this or Gatsby。

Couldn’t finish it。 Maybe I’ll appreciate it more when im older, but its so difficult to follow。 That’s not to say its bad。 It’s just hard。 There’s lots of gold in here though, but like a miner you have to work hard to find it。 If the book was shortened in half and only the best passages were kept while continuing the story, it would be incredible。

At first I rated this read 3 stars, then I wrote a 5-page paper on it and docked it one more。 To be frank, F。 Scott Fitzgerald is someone I like less and less the more I learn about him, and if you read these characters through the lens of his own life and worldview, —which spoiler, I did!— it solidifies the idea that he was a miserable man who hated women among other marginalized people。 I, needless to say, am not his biggest fan <3 would be interested to reread The Great Gatsby from when he wa At first I rated this read 3 stars, then I wrote a 5-page paper on it and docked it one more。 To be frank, F。 Scott Fitzgerald is someone I like less and less the more I learn about him, and if you read these characters through the lens of his own life and worldview, —which spoiler, I did!— it solidifies the idea that he was a miserable man who hated women among other marginalized people。 I, needless to say, am not his biggest fan <3 would be interested to reread The Great Gatsby from when he was younger and possibly more tolerable? Completing this novel was a real slog。 It was puffed up with so much filler and extraneous information that it appeared Fitzgerald was aiming to fulfill a page-count quota。 But once I made it to the halfway point, I felt I had to continue on just so I could put this one in the finished category。 This semi-autobiographical novel was written over the space of many years while Fitzgerald’s own wife Zelda was committed for mental illness。 His own dissolute lifestyle seemed to have eaten away at his Completing this novel was a real slog。 It was puffed up with so much filler and extraneous information that it appeared Fitzgerald was aiming to fulfill a page-count quota。 But once I made it to the halfway point, I felt I had to continue on just so I could put this one in the finished category。 This semi-autobiographical novel was written over the space of many years while Fitzgerald’s own wife Zelda was committed for mental illness。 His own dissolute lifestyle seemed to have eaten away at his ability to cogently organize his thoughts on the page。 To those who claim this is a masterpiece and a modern classic, I would say “I don’t get it。” I particularly found the poor punctuation and run-on sentences annoying。 How hard would it be to throw in a few periods here and there? Full stop。 Next thought。 Occasionally the author would wax eloquently and create a lovely scene that made me appreciate the French Riviera environment and the uber-rich privileged inhabitants。 However, overall the narrative just seemed tawdry and predictable。 American doctor marries rich heiress and lives the life of the nearly-idle rich。 He meets a younger pretty American actress and pines after her。 Wife starts to look less appealing after another illness。 They split up。 There is no happy ending。 。。。more
